For late use sow in a sheltered border in May, and set out the plants in July ; the green fruit can be picked off before frost and be ripened under glass. By training the tomato vines on trellises or tying to stakes, they mil increase in productiveness, the fruit will ripen better and be of finer quality. Our trials of 1896 embraced sixty varieties of distinct types, and our judgment as noted when in full bearing, is given in the description of each variety. In northern latitudes the cluster varieties are sure to develop and give good results. The Stone. Fruit very large and deep; bright scarlet; smooth, ripening evenly to the stem without a crack ; exceedingly solid and firm-fleshed; the best for family use and for canneries.
