The Romanmonuments lead us to suppose it was providedwith a hood (cucullus) except for those worn inrainless Egypt. Even after the garment becamea liturgical vestment, a vestige of the hood waspreserved in the adornment, just as it is on thecope. It was always dark in color, usually a chestnutbrown, and in Egypt, brown or purple, solidthroughout, without ornament, though the nar-.
