AUSTRIA — 1921: An 10 krone ultramarine and blue postage stamp depicting Coat of Arms of the Republic of Austria, which in its first forms was used by the First Austrian Republic from 1919. It consists of a free-floating, single-headed, black eagle with golden arms and a red tongue, whose chest is covered with a red shield crossed by a silver crossbar. The eagle wears a golden mural crown with three visible pinnacles on its head. In his right talon he carries a golden sickle with the edge turned inwards, in his left talon a golden hammer
Austria, is a country in the southern part of Central Europe, lying in the Eastern Alps. It is a federation of nine states, one of which is the capital, Vienna, the most populous city and state. A landlocked country, Austria is bordered by Germany to the northwest, the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. After World War I, in 1918, the different nationalities established their own states and only the German-speaking parts remained, forming a republic under the name “Deutschoster-reich” (German Austria), which name was shortly again changed to “Austria.” In 1938 German forces occupied Austria, which became part of the German Reich.
