Victorian tunnel leading to river Wear in Penshaw, used to transport quarried stone to riverside staithes north east England UK


In the 19th century there were quarries established to the south of the river Wear near Penshaw and this tunnel connected a quarry to staithes on the river to enable the shipment of stone towards Sunderland and beyond.
