Marie Curie (1867-1934, nee Marya Sklodowska), Polish-French physicist. Born in Poland, she became a student in 1891 at the Sorbonne university in Paris, France. There she met and married the French physicist Pierre Curie (1859-1906) in 1895. They isolated the radioactive elements polonium and radium in 1898. Marie and Pierre won shares of the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics for their work on radioactivity. Marie won the 1911 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the discovery of polonium and radium. Her death from leukaemia is thought to have been caused by her work with dangerous ionizing radiation.
