Human foetus. Illustration of human foetal development, 55 to 60 days after fertilisation. . Facial features are developing; the eyes have migrated inward from the sides of the head, which is large with a bulging forehead. Upper limbs are differentiated into forearms, wrists and fingers; the lower limbs progress at a slower rate. The liver is functioning, enlarged due to production of red blood cells until the bone marrow takes over, and sexual differentiation has occurred. The foetus is surrounded by the amniotic sac (grey). The umbilical cord connects the foetus to the placenta.
