If a bishop had been electedin 1874, Dr. James Duncan would no doubt have beenchosen. For this reason the friends of his rivals op-posed any election at all. This fact, together with an-other fact that many thought that a new bishop was notneeded, settled the question. Dr. James Duncan dyingbefore the next General Conference, the Church wasseized with a regret amounting to remorse that thisgreat preacher had not been honored with the bishop-ric. The next best thing, many thought, was to make abishop out of Wallace BISHOP WALLACE W. DUNCAN. 494 HOLSTON METHODISM. Bishop Duncan was a scholar, a Christian, and aman of indomitable energy. His business qualifica-tions were excellent. As a preacher he did not com-pare with his brother, but he presented a vigorous andmanly treatment of the subjects which he discussed inthe pulpit. In the social circle he was genial, humor-ous, companionable. In looking after the interestsof the Church in the Annual and District Conferenceshe was painstaking and thorough. He was a presidingofficer of the Bishop Early style. He cut and did not hesitate to criticize the language and man-ner of the preachers when he thought it holding a District Conference at a certainplace he was suffering with hay fever, and he was un-usually critical. One of the preachers in representinghis charge had occasion to say something about a grasswidow. Grass widow? grass widow? exclaim
