THE OLD KITCHEN FIRE. The kettle sending forth its steam, And cheery little song,The low, calm ticking of the clock, Speeding the hours along. The cricket, from its hiding-place His chirping song would lend,With merry heart, I welcomed him As if he were a smiling basketful of chips Did screen the little thing ;I did not care to hunt him out, I d rather hear him sing. And pussy sat, with half-shut eyes, And black and glossy fur,Dozing the sleepy hours away With low, contented the great logs would blaze and roar, And crackle as they lie ;While the bright sparks went trooping up, A goodly company. I used to wonder at the crane Which stretched its blackened armAcross the fire, in giant strength Boldly defying and hooks my wonder were, Suspended link by link ;That dear romance was long since lost In copy-books and ink.
