TheGehrett law, which has just been re-en-acted and put in full force again, pro-vides for the division of the cost of roadbuilding between the township and theproperty within a mile of the road, 40to 60 per cent, on the township and theremainder on the property. Applicationsfor such roads are made to the countycommissioners and they order the con-struction. The State law provides thatthe State will pay 50 per cent., the county. In the discussion of this part of the re-port the fact was brought out that thereare several laws, not altogether consist-ent with each other, under which roadscan be built and maintained. The princi-pal laws are as follows: The Braun law 25 per cent., the township per cent.,and the abutting property 10 per cent, ofthe cost of the improvement. The newHalf-Mill law makes a levy of thatamount to raise the States portion of thecost of road construction and will raiseabout $3,250,000 a year.
