Negotia-tions, of course,looked toward thesale of water bythe irrigation dis-tricts to the power companies for powerpurposes only. These finally resulted in ajoint agreement between the four parties atinterest formally executed January 15,1925, whereby the combined project was tobe built. The power companies, on theirside, agreed to erect a power plant, to becalled the Melones plant, to cost $2,500,-000 and to be capable of generating 40,000horsepower of electric energy, at a pointabout a mile down stream from the damand to be operated by water diverted there-. sue oi Melones power-house in a gorge ut the bianislaus river. at. They agreed to pay the districts for theuse of the water to operate this a total sumof $5,175,000, payments to be spread overa period of forty years. The output fromthe power plant to be poured into the Pa-cific Service electric distributing system, tothe manifest benefit of electric users in thesurrounding territory, particularly the irri-gation area controlled by the districts.
