"An image taken by photographer George H. Lyon on January 6, 1919, shows the transport ship Northern Pacific on Fire Island sand bar. The ship had 2,582 returned soldiers on board, many of whom were ambulatory wounded. The men were safely evacuated using breeches buoy, surf boats, naval launches, and submarine chasers. There were no casualties. The image also shows the ship's position approximately 200 yards off the Fire Island beach in about 11 feet of sand."
