We have given this somewhat large space to a noticeof the aspect of the great conflict between truth andfalsehood in the heart of Rome, because it is butcommon justice to form our estimate of the real cha-racter of a system by the influence which it exerts athome. If it be true, that the best idea of a manscharacter or disposition may be gained by observinghis conduct when acting in the unrestrained freedomof his domestic habits, then by this test, Rome muststand convicted before the world of all the perfidyand cruelty which history has recorded against THE MADIAI.
