Volcanic rocks including volcanic breccia along the top rim of Kerid, a volcanic crater lake in the Grimsnes area of Iceland
Rocks including volcanic breccia (gray-brown) along the top rim of Kerid, a volcanic crater lake in the Grimsnes area of Iceland, along the route known as the Golden Circle, seen up close at the top of the caldera. The caldera of this 3,000-year-old volcanic crater is intact. Kerid is believed to have been formed when a cone volcano erupted and emptied its magma reserve, causing the weight of the cone to collapse into the empty magma chamber. The caldera is approximately 55 m deep, 170 m wide, 270 m across.
