The Shay's single crankshaft, which drives all trucks, is made flexible by incorporating universal joints placed at intervals throughout its length. The gearing ratio applied to the small wheels gives an even turning movement and so reduces slipping. Here we see the Insular Lumber Company's Shay No. 12, a three-truck engine, at the Maaslud exchange sidings on the Philippine island of Negro's in October 1974.
