On the 23rd we crossed four passes. TheKichung-la is the watershed between the Raga-loshungand the Chungsang, a river which takes an independentcourse to the Tsangpo. The ascent to the fourth pass,the Kanglung-la, was very tiresome, the ground consist-ing of wet alluvium, wherein the horses sank so deepthat we preferred to go on foot and splash through themud.
