Marked evidence of bone disease in thevicinity of, but not involving, a joint, is rather an indication for a diagnosisof a non-tuberculous origin for the disease. A typical case may occur inthe upper end of the femur, when an area of lessened shadow [ a conditionwhich allows of the readier passage of the rays through the bone substance)is due to a destructive process in the bone, with absorption of the bonysalts. This is accompanied by a greatly thickened periosteum. The bone, therefore, appears on examination to be denser in the surrounding areas,in contradistinction to the general rarefaction which is so frequently seenin chronic cases of tuberculosis.
