In the au-tumn of that year he appears to have joined a party from thattown going West to locate in some unimproved townships; and inNovember he had a load of cattle from Salem, which he wastaking to Iowa City or vicinity. He went to Hesper, Iowa, wherehe worked for Russel Taber, a prosperous man, brother ofthe wife of his uncle Daniel Gove and of the wife of his unclePelatiah Gove. April 2, 1857, he had a removal certificate fromthe Friends Meeting at Starksboro, Vt., to Lynn, Iowa. Just before his marriage, hemoved across the state line to a town in Winneshiek County,Minn., and went to farming. For several years, he was a justiceof the peace, and cases were tried before him. He was electedchairman of the supervisors of his town, apparently in 1865, as onMarch 15, 1869, he was reelected to that office for the fifth time. In 1870, he was induced by his brother Hiram to remove toApopka, Fla.; but, not liking the experiment, returned northafter about five months, leaving there April 13, 1871, having ter-minated his business connection with his brother Jan. i, returned north, by wagons drawn by horses.
