The fa9ade is modern but afteran old design. The bell tower, or cam-panile, was begun by the celebratedpainter Giotto about 1335 and com-pleted about fifty years later. It is richly?adorned with sculpture and coloredmarbles and is considered the fineststructure of the kind in the world schism was over, and allthe European nations oncemore acknowledged the Popeat Rome (1417), it becamepossible to improve the cityand revive some of its ancientglory.
