Lana’i North Shore - Shipwreck Beach - Navy Fuel Barge YOGN-42

On the north shore of the Hawaiian Island of Lana’i, is a remote area known as Kaiolohia AKA Shipwreck Beach. It is an area of strong winds and rough seas. It is also a graveyard for ships that have been sunk here both accidentally and on purpose. The access is not paved so it is highly recommended that you rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle to go here. This spot has excellent views of Moloka’i and Maui. There are petroglyphs and other points of interest to explore. Because Shipwreck Beach is so remote, you expect pristine beaches and much of it is. And then you look up and see Navy Fuel Barge YOGN-42 just offshore. After WWII concluded, YOGN-42 was intentionally beached where she still resides today. She was constructed of reinforced concrete and will continue to deteriorate until there is nothing left of her.
