Having shell debris and sand mixed into its soils, the coastal plain in front of the high cliffs of Southern Iceland's former coastline is provides green and fertile farmland, but for the rearing of sheep, cows and horses, more than the growing of crops in the wet climate. With the rapid recovery or isostatic uplift of the land, following the release of billions of tonnes of ice weight, the former sea-bed in front of the former cliffs emerged as dry land.
