These were all comparatively small establishments em-ploying only a few men. but the water power from Mill 364 HISTORY OF HATFIELD. river has been developed to sustain two flourishing manu-facturing concerns located close by the spot where ThomasMeekins set up his sawmill in the early days. About 1874the Crescent Pistol Company was organized by Henry , Edward Preston, and Jonathan E. Porter, who com-menced to manufacture pistols in the old Moore sawmill, onthe site of the so-called pistol shop. In February, 1877,Andrew Hyde and Maj. Charles S. Shattuck brought up fromSpringfield their pistol manufacturing business and went intopartnership with Airs. Mary D. Porter. A year later withdrew and the business was continued by Hydeand Shattuck. In 1880 Major Shattuck bought out his. The Gun Shop. partner and conducted the factory alone, turning out manyrevolvers. Soon after he began to make single-barreled,breech-loading shotguns and a few years later. double-bar-reled guns also. Large quantities of both were made, aver-aging for a time 15,000 guns per year. The old factory was burned Jan. 29, 1881. It was imme-diately rebuilt on the same site. The present concrete damwas built in 1905. The manufacture of guns was temporarilyabandoned in 1909, the only arms now turned out being anew model four-shot pistol. The
