Jean Baptiste Drouet, postmaster who recognizing escaping Louis XVI


Jean Baptiste Drouet was the relay post manager who recognized first Marie Antoinette and then Louis XVI in the town of Sainte Menehould as the royal couple and their children attempted to flee France and the French Revolution. Drouet alerted the patriot militia in nearby Varennes who then halted the flight of the royals and had them brought back to Paris. The date was June 20, 1791.
