De Waterkant was a central place in the city as the meeting point for trade by sea and inland shipping over the rivers to the plantations. The four ships that lie on the quay and take up the entire first plan of the diorama illustrate this function of the Waterfront by the diversity in ship types. Far to the left a sea-going merchant ship (brigantine) anchored, to the right is a pondo with a dinghy. These simple ships with a banana leaf cover were used by the locals for the transport of goods. With the tent boat occupying a central position in the diorama and prominently flying the Dutch flag, plantation owners and their family members moved across the Suriname River.
