THE TWITE LiNOTA FLAVIROSTRIS The Twite is one of our less familiar species,especially during the spring and summer, when itsresorts are the moorland-. This species occurswherever there are suitable moors, from the Mid-lands, northwards to the Orkneys and Shetlands,and westwards to the Hebrides and St. are no moors on the latter group of islands,but they are a resort of the Twite Ireland the Twite is also widely dispersed overmost of the elevated moors. Outside the limits ofthe British Islands the Twite has a most restrictedrange, being known to breed only in Norway, andeven there principally near the coast. Duringwinter it migrates southwards, chiefly down theextreme western districts, and rarely reaches anyof the countries bordering the northern shores ofthe Mediterranean. There can be little doubt that the Twites whichbreed within our area are sedentary, in the sense. « V/^ Hfwy^l^^^if^ Twite THE TWITE 223 of never leaving it. The bird is subject to a certainamount of internal migration from the moors to thelower and cultivated districts ; whilst in autumn con-siderable numbers enter our area from continentaldistricts. It is a common migrant at Heligoland,both in autumn and spring—occurring in Octoberand November, and again in March. The habitsof the Twite, and during the winter, at least, thehaunts it frccjuents, are very similar to those of theLinnet. At the approach of autumn it becomesgregarious ; indeed we have noticed assemblies ofthis species as early as June, so that it seemsprobable the birds begin to gather as soon as nest-ing duties are over. Their favourite haunts at thisseason are weedy pastures and rough unenclosedlands, especially near the coast, and here in compactflocks they live, wandering little, so long as foodcan be obtained.
