Water rail. The water rail (Rallus aquaticus) is a small wetland bird whose breeding habitat is marshes and reed beds across Europe and Asia. Adults are 23-26 cm long and their body is flattened laterally to allow easier movement through reeds. Water rails use their bill to probe in mud or shallow water, also picking up food by sight, and mainly eating insects and aquatic animals.
