Minor surgical gynecology : a manual of uterine diagnosis and the lesser technicalities of gynecological practice : for the use of the advanced student and general practitioner . pos-terior section of Sims is speciallyadapted are illustrated in thecuts Figs. 184 to 188, takenfrom Sims. To perform this operation ina normally developed cervix would be entirely improper and figures represent different degrees of anteflexion, both of the bodyand of the cervix. The object of the operation—to straighten the uterinecanal—is at once apparent from the direction of the dotted lines. Dr. Sims lays particular stress on the unequal development of the cer-vix in these cases, the long, often thick and gristly posterior lip forminga direct obstacle to the ingress of the spermatozoa. The rationale of hisplan of dividing the posterior lip and making a large opening to theuterine canal—an opening which, being situated opposite the deepestportion of the posterior vaginal wall, is nearest the pool of semen collectedthere after coition—is certainly plausible, and has been verified by manysuccesses. That Simpsons operation would not achieve the same result. Fig. 1S4.—Lines of incision in anteflexion of the mostmarked degree. (Sims.) : DILATATION OF THE UTERUS. 273 is obvious on comparing the figures. The distinction between these twooperations, bilateral and antero-posterior section, has only recently beenemphasized by Sims in an article on the Treatment of Stenosis Uteri, published in Vol. III. of the Transactions of the American Gynecologi-cal Society, from which the illustrations credited to Sims in this section
