According to Roland-Gosselin, the Mexican name for this species is chende; according to J. A. Purpus, chente; and according to Dr. Rose, chinoa. Dr. Rose collected this species between Tehuacan and Esperanza in 1912 (No. 11429) arid Dr. C. A. Purpus sent a living plant to Washington in 1909 from San Luis, Oaxaca, Mexico.
