View of Colourful Buildings and Historic Quayside with Bayard’s Cove Fort on the River Dart, Dartmouth, Devon.
View from the River Dart looking at the steep valley around Dartmouth, Devon. Image shows residential and holiday properties together with the historic Bayard’s Cove Fort and the old Quay. The steep hill is known as Jawbone Hill‘, which can be accessed from ‘Above Town’. There are two vehicle ferries and a passenger ferry crossing the River Dart in to Dartmouth. This lower ferry runs between Kingswear, which has a busy marina and the terminal station for the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, and the popular riverside town of Dartmouth The ferry is owned and run by the South Hams District Council. The vehicles are transported on one of two pontoons powered by an attached tug boat, with both running at the busiest of times. The lower ferry tends to be the most convenient, bringing traffic in to the center of Dartmouth. A steam ferry was brought in to service by 1867 which was powerful enough to convey a horse and cart. In 1920 the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway company sold the ferry rights to the Dartmouth Corporation. Bayard's Cove fort was built at the narrowest part of the River Dart estuary in 1534 to protect the busy port. At ground level are a series of gun ports with commanding views which can be explored today. There would have been steps to an upper walk way, a view point and location to fire muskets at potential marauders. The waterfront setting along the Quay approach to the fort is a very popular location for film makers. The view beyond is that includes the Lower Ferry slipway and moored boats. Views along this West Country estuary are stunning and can be best viewed from the river.
