ENGINES USED BY THE TITAN INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE SERIES USED VOLATILE LIQUID OXYGEN WHICH CAUSED SEVERAL INCIDENTS WHERE 64 AIR FORCE PERSONNEL WERE KILLED AND AN 8 000 POUND NUCLEAR WARHEAD WAS BLOWN OUT OF THE MISSILE SILO SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET INTO THE AIR SAFER HYPERGOLIC FUELS WERE LATER USED IN THESE ENGINES BUT THE HIGHER FUEL COSTS CAUSED THE PROGRAM TO BE SHUT DOWN THE LAST FEW TITANS WERE USED TO LAUNCH HEAVY MILITARY SATELLITES INTO ORBIT BUT THAT EFFORT HAS ENDED ALSO
