Coal dust explosion experiment being carried out at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE) research site in Buxton, Derbyshire, UK. The SMRE was a forerunner of what is today the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Health and safety research in the UK started with investigations in the early 20th century into safety in mines. Experiments were carried out at galleries such as these that reproduced conditions inside mines. The experiments determined that coal dust was explosive under certain circumstances. The Buxton site opened in 1927. Photographed in the 1950s.
