Statues of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas grace a podium in Ottawa's historic Washington Square Park. The statues commemorate the site of the first Lincoln-Douglas debate held in the park in August 1858 as the two opposing candidates were running for a US Senate seat from Illinois. The dabate was the first in a series that was held at various locations around the state. The debates had Lincoln stressing equal rights for all men which became precursor to his position that ultimately contributed to the American Civil War and the eventual abolishing of slavery.
