Amsterdam, the Netherlands - 28 May 2016; Here we see all of AmsterdamÕs archetypes - beautiful canals, gabled houses and the ever present bicycles. Amsterdam is the NetherlandsÕ capital, famed for its artistic heritage, scenic canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, all legacies of the cityÕs 17th-century Golden Age. Despite its relatively small size and population, it is one of EuropeÕs great cities. The city has more than one hundred kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The Singel is one of the oldest; it encircled the city in the Middle Ages and served as a moat around the city until 1585. Bicycles rule Amsterdam. Transport is topsy-turvy here, where aggressive bikers bully both pedestrians and motorists.
