The Gobelins carpets and Damascus silks were the finest that could be procured for the occasion; every European luxury was provided; and various domestic comforts, not ordinarily supplied in Turkey, were well looked to here. The lattice-work which is placed on the windows - as usual in Turkish dwellings - to screen the fair inmates from the rude gaze of outsiders, was removed, and the windows all richly hung in magnificent silk hangings. A superb piano occupied a place in the grand saloon, the furniture was of Parisian the servants were Greeks and Europeans, except that the coachmen were French, and the steward was an English subject'.
