A view of the Deverill Valley from Cold Kitchen Hill, near the village of Brixton Deverill in Wiltshire, England.

The photograph shows the path that descends from Cold Kitchen Hill, leading north-west towards Brims Down, above the village of Brixton Deverill in south-west Wiltshire. Archaeological evidence indicates continual settlement on Cold Kitchen Hill from the early Iron Age through to Roman times, and there are different theories as to how the hill acquired its name. One suggestion is that the name derives from the Celtic 'Col Cruachen', meaning ‘hill of the wizard’. An alternative possibility is that the site was given this name after the settlement was abandoned: a cold kitchen because no one lived there.
