. Spons' dictionary of engineering, civil, mechanical, military, and naval; with technical terms in French, German, Italian, and Spanish . ains consjsts of two large oakdrums A E G B, C H F D, l^-75 in diameter, and 0-63 in height. Each of them has only oneentire end BE, C F : the opposite end AG, HD, being furnished with a circular opening U of 1782 GUNPOWDEE. O™ • 60 diameter in the centre. The two drums are traversed by the same iron axes I O, supportedbetween two strong vertical beams by two copper chains. Two copper discs a a, 6 6, fixed on theiron axis, connect the transverse iron axis I O with the ends E B and C F of the drum, while fourstrong cross-pieces, as A B, keep the whole steady. Each drum has a door M, of 0-35 by Oi^-eO,closed with four copper screws, and used for introducing and withdrawing the material. All thelower part of the machine is surrounded by a large trough N, furnished with inclined copperplanes, intended to receive the material when withdrawn by the doors, and conduct it into barrelsplaced beneath. The drum A E G B is used for graining, and the other C H F D for glazing the powder. The outer periphery of the granulator A E G B is furnished with twelve small cleats x, x, x,which, during the movement of the drum, move, and cause a small wooden hammer p, fastened bya cord to the side of the trough N, to strike constantly on its surface, detaching, by its blows, anyportion of the material which might adhere to the drum. A copper watering tube w w, 2 diameter, and 0»40 in length, having one side pierced with very minute holes, enters thegranulating machine, a little above its axis, and communicates, by a curved copper tube w m s,with a forcing pump. This pump. Fig. 3413, is composed of a copper pump-tree P, in which aperfectly well-fitting piston moves : an iron rod 11\ fastened to the upper part of the piston, worksbetween two wooden uprights. The piston is set in motion by means of a winch and a rope whichpasses over
