If the valve-stem ofa piston valve breaks, the rocker arm should beplumbed, the valve-stem disconnected and clampedsecurely in position, the front steam-chest head thentaken off and the valve shoved back against the stemand blocked between valve and head. Piston Valve Broken. If the piston valve isbroken, the steam-chest head should be taken off and thevalve, if it is not too badly broken, placed centrally on itsseat and blocked from the head to the valve to preventit from moving ahead. The valve-stem should also bedisconnected and clamped against the valve to keep thelatter from moving back. If clamping the valve-stemfails to keep the valve together, the back head should beremoved and clamped with blocks in the same manner asthe front head (Plate 70).
