Morning glory pollen grain. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a grain of pollen from the morning glory plant, or blue dawn flower (Pharbitis, or Ipomoea sp. ). The grain is seen on the surface of a flower's petal. The outer wall (exine) of this grain has several spiky projections, which may be used to help attach it to the hairs of pollinating insects. Pollen contains the male genetic information of a plant, and is carried to the female parts by insects, the wind or water. Once the female egg is fertilised, it forms a seed. Magnification: x2200 at 6x6cm size.
