Heavy machinery on lock 7 of the Peak Forest canal as repairs to the lock are underway on the Marple flight of locks on the 27th of February 2024
Cw 8611 Repairs to lock 7 Marple Repairs to lock 7 on the Marple flight of locks on the Peak Forest canal with the pound below the lock having been drained of water on Tuesday the 27th of February 2024 On 17th of August 2023, it was found that the towpath side wall of the chamber of lock 7 had moved inwards and it had become too narrow for boats to pass through it with a large hole appearing behind the lock wall in the towpath. Work is now progressing on the repairs to the lock, which once again are a substantial undertaking following on from a rebuild and reopening of lock 15 of the Marple flight of locks over the winter of 2017 -18 and then a similar situation occurring on lock 11 with a rebuild over winter 2018-19. The lock has been filled with stone and a safe surface to carry heavy machinery has been installed. The heavy machinery is now in place to start piling works in the ground between the towpath and the lock wall. Once the piles are in place, believed to be going 15 meters into the earth, the machinery will be removed, and the lock wall dismantled before rebuilding. A stoppage notice had been issued by the Canal and River Trust closing the whole of the Marple lock flight, which is still in force with a predicted reopening date of the 24th May 2024.
