It is a tremendous saving of time when time is valuable; also of material. For description, address JOHN STEEL, Ramge Building, Omaha, Nebraska. This procedure, carefully carried out, should insure 95% worm-free apples. In the Pajaro Valley and adjoining localities I find that the most prevalent cause of failure to secure the best control is due to the neglect of the August spraying. The orchardists and apple buyers arej largely influenced by the fear of knock-' ing of fruit with spray rods and the spray outfit. A little reflection should convince them that it would require special effort on the part of the men to dislodge 2% of the fruit. Then, if this applicatio would save 10% from the worms, th loss of the small quantity which woul occur when ordinary care was used i entirely negligible. Practical entomologists and horticul turists have still another phase of th problem to consider. This arises from the fact that the codling moth is not the only pest of apples and pears. Several other insects and diseases are causes of considerable damage, and frequently some^ one of these may be more destrucWEB than the apple worm. Then the control of the worms alone may not bring the saving necessary to financial success, or produce first-class fruit. Other remedies| than arsenate of lead are required for ' the control of some of these pests, but to make a separate application to cor- rect every disorder would require a far! too elaborate spraying program, and I greatly increase the expense. If pos-i sible, these various remedies should be combined in a single application, and the problem of preparing this combined.
