He was one of the ablest seacaptains of his time, and duringhis long service never lost a ship,and but one man. He was a firmdisciplinarian, but a just one andwas highly esteemed by his his long service on theocean he experienced many thrill-ing incidents. He sailed the Chinaseas infested vnth pirates, withoutmolestation. He attributed hisgood fortune in this to the powerof the Masonic signal, flying at hismasthead. He was an earnest Christian formany years; was a member of the. Master John Weir Dicks, Plymouth church of Worcester and an active worker in the Sunda\ was made a Mason in Amsterdam, Holland, and was an honorary memberof Ancient Landmark Lodge of Portland, Me.; and secretarj-of the CitizensExchange of Worcester for some years. He was married December 9, 1832, to Anne Tomlin at North WoodChurch, in Cowes, Isle of Wight, England. Mrs. Dicks died March 5, children were born to them: Isabella, born June 20, 1834, died December21, 1836; John Weir, born January 1, 1837, died in infancy; John,born April 29, 1839, died at Havanna, Cuba, October 12, 1860; Susan G.,born December 12, 1841, married Alfred B. Warren, resides in Holden, Mass.;Marianna, born December 7, 1843, married Frederick C.
