Scientists by Vidgelmir Cave, Reykholt, Iceland

The cave Vidgelmir is believed to be one of the largest lava caves in the world. Vidgelmir is a strange cavern of stalactites and stalagmites versus dripping icicles. The cave is situated in the lava field Hallmundarhraun close to the farm Fljotstunga in the Hvitarsida County. Traces of human habitation of the cave are kept in the National Museum in Reykjavik that date back to the Viking Age. Vidgelmir is a preserved site which is locked and requires permission with a guide to gain entry.
