A very largeproportion of this amount has been taken from placer deposits in thevalley of the Force, a river that has long been known to be exceed-ingly rich in gold. This river, which seems to be of comparatively recent origin, hasits source in the heart of Antioquia, near the city of Medellin, anddrains northwardly, between the two ranges of the Cordilleras, througha distance of about 175 miles, to its junction with the Nechi.
