James Kent (1849-1916), American homeopath. Kent became interested in homeopathy when, in 1876, it apparently cured his seriously ill wife. He became a practitioner, helping promote homeopathy in the USA and developing the idea that patients could be grouped into 'constitutional types'. Homeopathic medicine is based upon the belief that a substance which, when ingested, produces similar symptoms to a disease will, in infinitesimal dilutions, cure that disease. In many cases dilutions are so small that the patient is unlikely to ingest even a molecule of the diluted substance. Despite an ambiguous scientific basis, homeopathy is a popular and harmless treatment.
