We have kept constantly in mind the followingpoints that are neeessarj^ in a practical book of thiskind, namely:-— (1) It must cover the principal field of a track-mans work. (2) It must not waste space by going outside ofthat field. (3) It must avoid elaborate theories, which he hasnot the time to investigate. (4) Its language must be plain enough to
