Development of throat and trachea, illustration. Left-to-right sequence showing the development of part of the throat, trachea and associated airways, a process that takes place during human embryonic development. The resulting structure is known as the laryngotracheal diverticulum. Here, a single airway is dividing into two. At top, the different genes and proteins involved in this process are named: NK2 homeobox 1 (thyroid transcription factor 1), forkhead box protein A2 (FOXA2), sonic hedgehog (Shh), fibroblast growth factor 10 (FGF10) and transcription factor GATA-6 (part of a family of zinc finger transcription factors).
