Here it will be seenthat the steel is very hard in the air-hardened state, and that the hardnessfalls rather markedly as the reheating israised to 500 deg., but at 600 deg. C. asubstantial secondary hardening sets inwhich makes the material much harderthan it was in the initially air-hardenedstate. These facts are of considerable im-portance from the point of view of themachine shop, for they mean that high-speed tools should be treated in such away that they possess this secondaryhardness before they are put into can be effected in one of two ways:(1) The tool may be air-hardened in theusual manner and then reheated to thenecessary temperature, or (2) the sameresults can be obtained by hardening thetool by quenching, from the hardeningtemperature, in a bath of molten lead or suitable liquid which is kept at thecorrect temperature.
