STEAD, WILLIAM HENRY, attorney-general of Illinois, was born in La Salle Co., 111., June 12, 1858. He is theson of Henry and Sarah Elizabeth (Read) Stead. He received his early education in the ccnmon schools,later attending Onarga Seminary, and still later taking a course at Asbury (now DePauw) Lfniversity. He wasadmitted to the bar in 1883 and for ten years praolictd in Ottawa. There was an interim in 1894 and 1895 inwhich he was the assistant general attorney of the Rock Island Railway at Chicago, but in 1895 he returned toOttawa anil pradiccd until l!i()5. Mr Stead is a rerAiblican. He was at one time city attorney of Ottawa,later betwicn the years 189(i and 1900, becoming states attorney of LaSalle county. Hewas elected attorney-general of Illinois in 190-1 and re-elected in 1908. He is a member of A. F. * A. I, O. O. F., B. P. O. E.:club, Union League of Chicago; office, Springfield. 150
