At the battle of Kinston,North Carolina, he was also complimented on the battle-field by General J. B. Foster for gallant service underfire in the face of the enemy. Major Jeffries commanded the regimental howitzerbattery from January 7, 1864, to March 17, 1864; waspromoted second lieutenant June 12, 1863, at New-Berne,North Carolina; and was honorably mustered out of ser-vice, at his own request, at Varan, Virginia, October 12,
