Sign post for the Treasure Loop trail. Superstition Mountains in Lost Dutchman State Park near Mesa, Arizona. The Superstition Wilderness area is managed by Tonto National Forest. Named by settlers after hearing Apache and Pima Indian lore about the mountains. The Lost Dutchman Mine legend's most famous explorer is Jacob Waltz. Waltz arrived from Germany during the gold rush of the 1850's. When Waltz died, he had only a few gold samples and maps of the Superstition Mountains. However, in the early 1900's, the Superstition Minig District produced 60,000 ounces of gold, valued at nearly $3,000,000. It was the only gold ever found at the Superstition Mountains.
