GEORGE BLRBAXKSOMERS, Commissioner ofthe Board of Public Health, andPhysician-Superintendent of LaneHospital, is a native of San Fran-cisco, where he was born August4. 1862, the son of William J. Somersand Kate (Burbank) Somers. Hisearlier education was obtained in thepublic schools of San Francisco, andlater he went East to Harvard Col-lege, where he graduated in 1886with the degree of A. B. Upon returning to San FranciscoDr. Somers entered the Cooper^Medical College, and in 1888 grad-uated as a physician, thereafter re-ceiving the appointment of ResidentSurgeon at the Southern PacificHospital at Sacramento. In 1889 heentered upon the practice of medicine in San Francisco. His attain-ments were early recognized by the municipal authorities, and in 1891he entered the service of the city as Chief Surgeon in the EmergencyHospital service, continuing therein until 1895.
